Egg Carving Tutorials by Carla Kelly
If you are new to egg carving, the following tutorials are available for you online. Each tutorial contains a list of tools and their care plus information about dealers. I am also providing the patterns to each egg carving along with step by step instructions and photos of the work in process. The tutorials are easy to read and follow. I would suggest to start out with an easy design which are listed below in the order of difficulty. It took me long hours to create each tutorial. From designing and sketching to carving and photographing each step. Coauthor Ron Cheruka has provided the tool section and an in detail description about the burs you will be using and applying, including how to take care of your burs.
"Battle of the Dragons"
This tutorial has it all. A section on tools, and one of my designs ready for you to print out and use. There are step by step instructions with tons of photos of each step that will gu id you in how to carve this dragon.

"Mermaid 1"
The Mermaid is a blue ribbon winner three times over. I entered this design in 2007 at the International Egg Art Show in Dallas, TX. It was not decorated then nor was is sitting in a water bowl and did not have a running water pump that created a fountain. I converted this egg carving into a table fountain after the show and created this tutorial. The egg is also decorated. The other blue ribbons were earned by two of my students from Australia. They used their own style of decorating and followed the carving instructions. One blue ribbon was won at and egg art show in Sidney, AU and another in Pert, AU.
Price: $ 60.00
"Christmas Angel"
The Angel carving aims at how to work a human face, hands and feet. It shows you how to work a garment and how to create layers in a relief carving. Not only that, but how to deal with "dead angles". Those are areas that can make a relief carving look flat and without depth.

"Manger Theme"
This tutorial does not have a pattern but it is designed to turn you loose and have some fun with you relearning how to draw and carve as a child would approach it. It also teaches you how to compare distances between objects and how to apply foreshortening and use perspective. The design is somewhat fashioned after the style known as "cubism" and looks modern. It teaches you how to look for and shapes and forms in an object you want to design and carve into a relief carving and how make those shapes appear 3 dimensional.
Price? $ 45.00
"Thumbelina"
This is an Intaglio Carving and also known as "reverse method" or "reverse carving". The motive has been carved into the eggshell like one would carve a mold. In other words it is carved in the negative. Areas that normally protrude are inverted. One needs to use a light source on the inside of the eggshell while carving in order to see the light and shadow values. The thinner the eggshell is the more light will shine through and visa versa. This type of carving gives you more possibilities to show light and shadow than a thin surface as an eggshell will allow you to do in relief carving. You can create subtle shades with this method as if working with a pencil on a piece of paper. The motive only shows in the positive when the eggshell is lit from the inside. This method can be applied to any motive on an eggshell. Thumbelina was my first tutorial and in some of the tips and teachings in the tool section are not the same as in my later tutorials. As I learned more I also changed some of the techniques and the tools I used. Still it's tools section is full of tips and know how as for example how to use an air compressor, regulator and how to attach hoses and so on. Some people actually have no idea what PSI to use while carving and what a regulator is, let alone how to maintain an air compressor properly. So this tool section goes into length on this subject. (Maybe even too lengthy?) But of course you may skip that tool section if you are familiar with the tools of the trade.
Price: $ 60.00
"Iris"
The tutorial will show you how to do this and I promise, it's easier than you think.
Price: $ 45.00
